ensemble freymut Austria

The central figure is a Jewish harpsichordist who experienced three stylistic eras and left to posterity a collection of musical treasures of immeasurable value. Without the remarkable patronage of Sara Levy in her Berlin salon, the Bach Renaissance under Felix Mendelssohn would have looked very different. The mysterious traces of two trio sonatas by Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann, lead ensemble freymut to the extraordinarily fascinating life story of the Berlin musician and patron Sara Levy.

In her Berlin salon, where famous contemporaries such as Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, E. T. A. Hoffmann, and Bettina Brentano were guests, Levy also paid tribute to her great passion for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. To illustrate Sara Levy's forgotten role in history, a concert programme was developed in collaboration with the Spanish composer Daniel Serrano, honoring the harpsichordist in an unique way. The Andalusian composer draws compositional ideas from Sara Levy's collection for a tribute to the famous musician and patron, resulting in a contemporary suite for four instruments—a musical adventure that immediately touches and makes music an open sonic space across centuries.

Somewhere in late October ‘23 my harpsichord teacher (yup, that is the enigmatic ‘merchant of music and stories’ from my book!) had a surprise for me: a collection of lute tablature, by a composer named Adrian Le Roy (c.1520–1598). It did not take long before I was hooked. Hours on end, I spend transcribing and arranging the pieces for some of the instruments I have at home. Now,  it feels only natural that I would share these recordings with you as well! It is my aim and hope to show how fresh and relevant this repertoire still is, and to encourage other (amateur) players to try these pieces themselves.

"an inspiring, affirming and powerful piece of writing (and my favourite so far of The Telling’s work)"
LouReviews, Louise Penn October 2022

Spain, 1492. At twilight on her final night in Seville, a Jewish woman lights the lamps. She is being forced to leave Spain and set sail for an uncertain future. Her story echoes down the ages to the personal stories of people affected by politics and war today. She tunes into voices of a community of Jewish, Christian and Muslim women from across the Spanish peninsula.

Down the centuries, women’s stories of integration, love, the rich cultural heritage of the Spanish peninsula and racial intolerance are played out to a soundtrack of plaintive Sephardic songs and lively medieval music.

It costs just £5.99 to stream the film until 24 March 2024.
