"""Barca di Venetia per Padova"" (Venice, 1605) by Adriano Banchieri Banchieri's madrigal comedy stands out for its rich and complex narrative frame. His music gives voice to the most extraordinary group of characters on an imaginary river cruise from Venice to Padua, two principal centres of the Venetian Republic. The typical Burchiello carries every kind of passengers: merchants, courtesans, students, Jews, foreigners. Such a variety of personas offers the funniest vivid musical representation!"

Musical Offering: Transcending Time Online

Canada
Bach’s Musical Offering was initiated in 1747 when Frederik the Great challenged Bach to improvise a three-part fugue on a musical theme chosen by Frederik himself. The Musical Offering was his answer: a brilliant collection of canons and fugues and a trio sonata that is without parallel, all dedicated to exploring and exhausting the contrapuntal possibilities of the same musical theme. Composed in 2002, Vancouver composer Jocelyn Morlock’s “Revenant” is based on reversing the same royal theme.

"From searching for secret codes in continuo numberings and staring at smudgy slurs to even developing a special kind of bow, no stone has been left unturned while generations of musicians have been searching the One True Way to interpret Bach so us mere mortals could maybe finally understand the thoughts of this musical giant and understand just how, exactly, did he want his music to be played. Which is all well and good. But how about we just have a bit of fun and enjoy the beautiful music?"
