Finish off early music month and the days after early music day with Cantatas and Motets directed by Peter Barley and Cecilia Madden with three of Limerick’s finest vocal ensembles – Ancór, Sagittarius Hiberniensis, and St Mary’s Cathedral Choir.

Although we often place Johann Sebastian Bach at the pinnacle of the Bach musical family tree, he inherited a long line of musical tradition that spanned back to the early 17th century.

The three vocal ensembles will present cantatas by JS Bach intertwined with sonorous motets by several of his forebears, including Johann (the “Erfurt”) Bach, Johann Christoph, and Johann Michael Bach.

This event is part of the Limerick Early Music Festival (24-26 March).

Bachhaus Eisenach Germany
Bachhaus Eisenach, Frauenplan 21, Eisenach
Three years of traveling through Europe by coach and ship, 200 pages of diary, 300 pages of accounts, astronomic expenses of 55.749 talers: 17-years-old Price Leopold of Anhalt-Koethen would hit the headlines these days. On his grand tour he treasured up political, sociocultural and other “experiences of life” in passing. He purchased antiques, art, curiosities but also printed music from England, Italy and France for his little court in Koethen. What among all this might have later inspired Johann Sebastian Bach?
Hamburger Ratsmusik has compiled original texts and musical impressions of this journey in an enjoyable program, thus celebrating Bach’s 338th birthday in his birthplace in Eisenach.

Musicians
Peter Bieringer - recitation

Simone Eckert - viola da gamba & Anke Dennert – harpsichord
